BoF (initial meeting) on "Identity enabled networks" at ietf.org/proceedings/99/agenda

Don't know what it is? Don't worry, it is new and shiny and not well defined.

Padma Pillay-Esnault on stage about the problem statement of Identity-based networks. Specially in the context of the identifier/locator split.

For instance (if I understand, because she is quite abstract), access control of machines should be based on "identity", not on the IP address as does the typical firewall today.

Her proposal: a GeneRic IDentity Services (GRIDS) with identity common services, over existing ID/loc split systems like or .

@bortzmeyer Ok, I'll bite, and also I don't pretend to be a security guru. Can't asymmetric key athentication work as an identification mechanism ?

@aaribaud We were discussing the problem statement, and use cases, not yet implementation. There are many identity systems (think of the SSH example I gave), the problem is to have something standard / available for all applications
