The Case of the Welsh Autoresponder
The English half of the sign is printed correctly and says, “No entry for heavy goods vehicles. Residential site only.” Clearly enough, the point of the sign is to prohibit truck drivers from entering a residential neighborhood.
Since the sign was posted in Swansea, Wales, the bottom half of the sign is written in Welsh. The translation of the Welsh is, “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.”
@ffeth I wonder if they'd take a somewhat more technical writeup from an infosec perspective.
When I poke at websites to look for vulnerabilities, one of the things I'm looking for is little innocuous errors that tell me more about how the site works, and the mindset of the developer. Does it take Devanagari numerals for page numbers? Does it strip out angle brackets when displaying user text, or encode them? Are server error messages informative, or close-lipped?
That's like half the job.
@varx He's still around, speaking at conferences, but not sure if he would update his website.
I'd be so happy!
@varx -> look for mastodon user @mako @social.coop
@ffeth OMG LOL that's hilarious
@ffeth given that almost all the Welsh I know I learnt from road signs, this is quite disturbing
@ffeth
Sit this makes us Jack's lol stupid! You'd think Swansea council would be able to do a better job than this.
@ffeth Oooh, that looks like a fun site. I wonder if the author is still accepting submissions; it hasn't updated in almost 8 years but maybe if I send them something enticing...
