#OpenSSH cannot compile with #OpenSSL 1.1? "error: OpenSSL >= 1.1.0 is not yet supported" First time I see this: the OpenSSL of #Debian *stable* is *too* recent.

Gentoo uses bleeding edge packages most of the time. However, OpenSSL 1.1.0g has been masked since August 2016:
- dev-libs/openssl-1.1.0g-r2::gentoo (masked by: package.mask, ~amd64 keyword)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Lars Wendler <polynomial-c@gentoo.org> (26 Aug 2016)
# Masked while being tested and reverse deps aren't fully compatible
